Before I was a director, I was a writer. I’m still a writer, the only difference is that when people used to ask me what I did I would say “I’m a writer” whereas now I say “I’m a writer and a director.” Whether I tell them I’m a writer or director or both, they usually ask “of what.” At that point I say something like “commercials” and they say something like “oh did you do the one with the gecko?” and I say “no” and they look disappointed, so I ask what they do because in my experience people find it easiest to talk about themselves. While they’re talking about themselves I try to be an active listener, but occasionally I’ll find myself wondering if I should have just steered them towards this website since it’s supposed to do the whole explaining part for me, or whether that would be a weird thing to do in casual conversation. Anyway, glad you’re here so I don’t have to try and explain what I do if we ever run into each other at a party.
